Behind The Veil: In Conversation with Helen Hird Illustrations

There is something truly magical about preserving the fleeting moments of a wedding day through the eyes of an artist. Long after the flowers have faded and the last dance has ended, a beautifully crafted illustration becomes a timeless heirloom. Capturing not only what was worn, but the emotion, movement and atmosphere that made the day unforgettable.

For this edition of Behind the Veil, we sit down with luxury wedding illustrator Helen Hird Illustrations, whose elegant hand-painted creations have become treasured keepsakes for couples across the UK. From fashion illustration beginnings to live wedding artistry, her work celebrates craftsmanship in its purest form, embracing traditional techniques in an increasingly digital world. We spoke about her creative journey, the weddings that have left a lasting impression, emerging bridal trends, and why believing in yourself has been the greatest masterpiece of all.

Behind the Veil: A Q&A with Our Favourite Wedding Illustrator Helen Hird:

1. What inspired you to pursue wedding illustration, and when did you realise it was more than just a creative passion?

I first studied fashion illustration as a module in college and fell in love with it straight away. I remember coming home from a full day at college and just wanting to sit and paint again. I would illustrate models from magazines and ‘bloggers’ (as they were called at the time). I used to post them on my instagram (with a dodgy 2014 Valencia filter) then one day someone messaged me and asked “could you paint me in my wedding dress’? The rest is history! 

2. Every artist has a signature style. How would you describe yours, and what emotions do you hope each illustration evokes long after the wedding day has passed?

Firstly, I have always painted a signature eyelash on my illustrations - I always feel it adds such a nice finishing touch and is almost like me signing the piece. Aside from the eyelash, I just aim to create classic, timeless pieces made solely using traditional materials. I will never go digital and love to create everything by hand. In a world full of Ai, I feel like this is valued now more than ever and I want to keep flying the flag for hand-made work that can be treasured long after the wedding day. 

3. Can you share a particularly memorable wedding you’ve illustrated and the story behind why it has stayed with you?

I created a Bride & Groom painting for Polly and Harry Newman. If you don’t know Polly, she is a fashion broadcaster at Sheer Luxe, among lots of other amazing things she has worked on and achieved. I have followed Polly for years so it was a real ‘pinch me’ moment to get to create this piece that would be displayed in her Pinterest worthy home. She was also the loveliest person from start to finish and her bridal look was to die for (think feathers, peplum silhouette, a flowing scarf and her iconic bob.)

4. If your artistic journey were described in three words, what would they be, and why?

Belief In Myself. 

Day to day, I'm not the most confident person. But when it comes to my business, I believe in it - and myself. So much so that 11 months ago I quit my full-time job, with no backup plan, to give it everything I had to be able to add live illustration to my services.

5. How do you ensure every illustration feels as unique as the couple themselves?

I ask for lots of photos - I always say ‘the more the merrier’ as I like to make sure I capture every detail and really get a feel for the outfits; how they move and how the fabrics hang on the body. I also don’t copy a specific photo or pose. Not having the limitation allows me to create an illustration that showcases every detail of the outfits at their very best.

In terms of live illustration, I don't believe in working from templates. Even though it would speed up the process (and probably make my life a lot easier) I want to create every illustration from scratch to be as personal as possible. 

6. What are the most beautiful venues or settings you’ve had the pleasure of illustrating?

Hedingham Castle in Essex is breathtaking. When I first walked in to set up my equipment, I was literally speechless. I was based in ‘Ashurst House’, which was built in 1718 and has the most incredible view of a lake stretches as far as you can see, covered in lily pads and surrounded by greenery and florals with a central water feature. I felt like I was in Bridgerton and really had to pinch myself that I am privileged enough to be able to work in such beautiful places. 

7. If you could illustrate any wedding in history or fiction, whose would it be?

What a great question!! I would love to have live illustrated at Monica and Chandlers wedding.  Phoebe and Rachel's dresses were the most iconic 00’s style and Joey in the WWII costume - need I say more?

8. Have you noticed any emerging trends in modern luxury weddings that excite you?

I love painting a strong silhouette, so I am really excited by the more structured bridal looks I have seen emerging. Think Dua Lipas Schiaparelli two piece for her civil ceremony - complete with white satin gloves. The trend has a real couture ‘old Hollywood’ feel to it - celebrating and accentuating the female figure with no fuss. Markarians latest wedding collection has some great examples of this style too. I find it so chic and a refreshing shift from the more ethereal trends we have seen over the past few years. 

9. What exciting projects are on the horizon for you?

This is my first full wedding season of live illustrating, and I am jam packed! So I am really excited to be part of so many special days this year. I feel so lucky that my work day is the best day of someone else's life - and it’s an honour I don’t take for granted. I am also getting to visit so many new venues for the first time, which I can’t wait for. A popular one for me is Copdock Hall near Ipswich, it looks like a beautiful setting. 

10. What is one piece of advice every bride should hear?

I have actually not been a bride myself yet (always a supplier, never a Bride!) but I would say don’t focus on pleasing other people, because you can’t please everyone. The day should be about you, your partner and celebrating your love - so lean in to whatever brings you joy. Celebrate the things that make you unique, as a couple. Add your own personality wherever you can - it will not only make you happy, but it will make your day all the more memorable.

As our conversation comes to a close, one thing becomes abundantly clear, every illustration is far more than a portrait. It is a celebration of craftsmanship, individuality and the memories that deserve to be cherished for generations.
